Paranormal Cirque throws caution to the wind!

On Saturday night, Shirley and I hit the road for Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor where Paranormal Cirque had rolled into town for a four-night stay. In an age where the fabled freak show no longer exists, and traveling carnivals have become corporate entities, it’s refreshing and oddly novel to see the majesty of the Big Top erupt from asphalt.

The atmosphere was abuzz from the moment we entered the tent, costumes characters roamed the lobby offering startles and impromptu photo-ops. The scent of fresh popcorn permeated the air as revelers gathered in throngs to purchase souvenirs and escape the doldrums of life for a spell.

I, myself, most enjoyed the miniature haunted maze that had been erected at the center of the lobby. Bathed in a dim, red light, the space featured several twists and turns and was surprisingly populated by an abundance of actors who offered playful scares. Among my favorites was one lady who was dressed as a Silent Hill nurse and another silent dame who appeared as a mourning bride.

The main show commenced with the chattering of a chainsaw and much applause, when late-comers entered the Big Top they were heckled by the lead performer both vocally and with a comical middle finger. Those of us who had already been seated ate up the light-hearted insults.

The performances began in earnest with a quartet of undead gymnasts and was further highlighted by a burly archer, mind-bending illusions, and death-defying acrobatics! The show was complimented by a bizarre contortionist, vivacious, scantily-clad dames, and concluded with a lively homage to Thriller!

Shirley and I have now witnessed both the first and third leg of Paranormal Cirque, here’s to hoping that elusive second leg of the tour has dates set for Metro Detroit next year!
