No, I’m Not A Human is a first-person horror video game released on September 15th and available on Steam. I discovered the demo back in August and was hooked at first sight. The setting is apocalyptic and the atmosphere both eerie and foreboding. A promotional description on Steam reads:
WARNING. Stay inside. Lock your doors. Close the blinds. Only let humans in. Eliminate all Visitors. An anxiety horror about paranoia in the End of Times.
As you might have guessed, in addition to haunted attractions, I also enjoy gaming as a hobby, and the horror genre, to no surprise, is among my very favorite. You can follow along with all the fun on my YouTube Channel which can be accessed through the embedded video below.
Gameplay begins amid two threats — a sun that has suddenly made life on Earth hellish with excessive heat, and mysterious Visitors with an appetite for murder who’ve clawed their way up to the surface world. Chaos and confusion have left regular people desperate and displaced, and the player, armed with various tools of discernment, must differentiate between human beings and the dangerous Visitors.
Narratively, No, I’m Not A Human, feels like a hybrid of Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Aesthetically, the character design is rather simple, but some how in that simplicity the developers captured something equal parts unsettling and engaging. The dialogue between the player and the various characters is perhaps the highlight of the game, each one has personality, a unique cadence, and a story to tell.
The visual presentation creates a retro vibe thick with a sense of impending doom, all the while the player is confined to a single dwelling which fosters a sense of claustrophobia. The only way to gather information from the outside world is through brief newscasts, peering out windows, and of course, by holding conversation with the many folks who come knocking on your door.
It’s the type of game that you find yourself thinking about throughout the day, aching to return to this subversively weird world and the odd characters who dwell within.
