Ice, wind, and snow has made for a brutal winter throughout Metro-Detroit. Such prolonged, frosty conditions can make it difficult to keep the spooky vibes through the dead of winter. But with January now in the rearview mirror and Valentine’s Day upon us, we creatures of the night can indulge both our sweet tooth and our appetite for all things eerie and macabre.
Some may find Valentine’s Day an odd or even inappropriate holiday on which to highlight certain elements and iconography of our culture generally reserved for October, but I disagree. In fact, I think the holiday of lovers lends itself quite well as an extension of the season of screams.
Love does possess a dark underbelly, does it not? Who among us doesn’t enjoy a good love gone bad story laced with lust, obsession, jealousy, and worse. All it takes is a little creativity (and a fair bit of marketing) to turn Valentine’s Day upside down, and that’s exactly what select haunted attractions intend to do this weekend — which, if you haven’t noticed is kicked off by Friday the 13th!
Here in Michigan, Hush in Westland will lure wayward lovers into a foursome…of Valentine-themed attractions that is! This quartet has affectionally been dubbed — Love Kills, Blood Vows: Beneath the Veil, Love Rave: Til Death Drops the Beat, and Built for Love. For those of a certain age, Hush will also boast three secret love-themed watering holes — Hexed Hearts, Camp Heartbreak, and Franky’s Freaky Love Shack.
The Valentine-centric event will welcome guests this Friday and Saturday from 7 – 11p and on Sunday from 7 – 10p. For more information, please call 734.502.6026 or visit the following link: Hush Valentine Haunt
LOVE BITES
West of Metro-Detroit and at roughly the midpoint of Lansing and Jackson lies Leslie, Michigan, home of Awaken Haunted Attraction. Awaken too will entertain thrill-seekers with their own spin on Cupid’s holiday — Love Bites. This will be a two-night event open to the public on Friday from 7 – 10p and Saturday from 7 -11p.
As an added flourish, the Friday the 13th performance has been dubbed Total Redout. On this most unlucky night, the entirety of the attraction will be bathed in the sinful, anxiety-inducing color of red. Not to be outdone, Saturday will flip the script and snuff the lights for Total Blackout — nothing but a pinprick of light to guide your feet through the tantalizing darkness of Awaken on Valentine’s Day.
