Long ago, when blogging was yet a novel concept, I wrote a series called Word of the Week. I did this periodically throughout the year, but during the month of October, each entry would relate to words that, in one way or another, were evocative of horror and the Halloween season. This particular missive was originally posted on Wednesday, October 6, 2010.

Word of the Week has risen from the grave and just in time for the first edition of the 2010 haunt themed vocabulary booster! I first began this darkly rich tradition in 2006 and hapless Halloween junkies have been thanking me ever since. caliginous [ke’lijenes] –adjective: misty, dim; obscure, dark.
I’d be remiss not to mention the tongue tingling noun form of the word: caliginosity. The word just sounds spooky.
