Haunts Gone By: Screamatorium

A new column chronicling past pages of the Fear Finder.

Most readers of Horrorlust are familiar with the Fear Finder, a seasonal events newspaper that could be found throughout the State of Michigan each and every fall for the better part of 30 years. Published by Ed Terebus, owner of Pontiac’s world famous Erebus, the newspaper was an advertising outlet for haunted attractions and something folks such as myself looked forward to during haunt season. It was announced last fall that the iconic newspaper would not be produced in 2023 and it seems it will not make a return this year.

However, the website does still exist, so perhaps there is hope for the future. Curious minds can follow the link here: Fear Finder

This whole business has made me nostalgic for days gone by, and so I broke out my collection of the treasured tome and thumbed through some past editions. And I thought that it could be fun to highlight ads from haunted attractions that are no longer with us. Enjoy!

The Screamatorium had some connection to the long-running, Downriver attraction, The Scream Machine. As you can see from the ad, like Scream Machine, it too ran in the City of Taylor. My brother, Jason, our good friend, John, and myself happened to tour it back in 2006. I recall few details from the trip as it was several years before Horrorlust (hell, it was before even Hallowblog). But, I can remember that we came away with a positive experience and were delighted when a few actors posed for pictures with us at the conclusion of the haunt.
