Cleveland Trip Underscored by Mix of Emotions

This past Saturday, I took to the road with 7 Floors of Hell and Bloodview on the agenda. It was a fun outing despite some rain but overall I did expect more from my maiden voyage to 7 Floors of Hell. The same can be said of my beloved Bloodview; this was my third trip to the haunt called home by the Legion of Terror  and although it had its moments, I found myself nostalgic for years gone by.

7 Floors of Hell, as the name implies, featured seven separate haunted attractions — Chaos, The Basement, House of the Dead, Catacombs, The Butcher Shop, Mental Ward and Phobia. Chaos and The Basement were the best executed, House of the Dead also had several redeeming qualities but on average the various haunts offered too few unique scares or interesting characters.

The set designs fit the bill and each attraction featured plentiful, impressive props, but only a handful of actors engaged in fun and creative interaction, the vast majority delivered simple jump scares and bland, cliched vocalizations.

Bloodview remained a beautiful, macabre Mecca but the cast on this night was largely missing that magical spark. There were memorable moments sprinkled here and there but that was the exception. Perhaps the lack of punch was caused by the rain, or the false emergency that was in full swing upon our arrival or maybe it was simply the effect of the passage of time on yours truly. Such things are difficult to discern these days.

2015 Haunt Schedule: Never is Enough

The haunt schedule can be a restless beast — there are time restraints, geographic considerations, unexpected vehicle maintenance and of course the threat of inclement weather. The 2014 schedule was made all the more problematic when some friends and I decided to produce a home haunt for a Halloween party. The CikNis was held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 but the build began in early September and as it was quite an undertaking, the project limited the number of haunts I visited that month to exactly one.

In addition I acted in the Wyandotte Jaycees haunted house on three or four nights in late October and unfortunately several of my Friday nights were effectively wiped out because I was needed at work. Don’t get me wrong, both The CikNis and the opportunity to act with the Wyandotte Jaycees were worthwhile and fruitful experiences but my participation in each did eliminate potential nights from the road schedule.

This year there is no home haunt to consider and I have yet to determine whether or not I’ll reprise my role as the irrepressible Gerkins with the Wyandotte Jaycees, so with that said the haunt schedule will feature more flexibility this fall. Although, a number of my Fridays will once again be hampered by work responsibilities. But, over the years I’ve learned to roll with the punches and leave it in the hands of the haunt fates.

Below, in no particular order, are possible outings for the 2015 haunt season.

HIGHWAY TO HELL

Night #1 – The Deadland (Warren), Fear Factory (Mt. Clemens) & Panic at Pine Stump Hollow (St. Clair)

Night #2 – The Dark Box (Pinckney) & The Boneyard (Stockbridge)

Night #3 – Jackson’s Underworld (Jackson) & Shawhaven Haunted Farm (Mason)

Night #4 – Heck of A Haunted Barn (Monroe) & Haunted Hydro (Fremont, OH.)

Night #5 – Past Tense After Dark (Lapeer), Scott’s Rooms of Terror (Oxford) & Tunnel of Terror (Rochester)

Night #6 – Haunted Elementary (Bridgeport), Clio Manor (Clio) & Exit 13 (Mt. Morris)

Night #7 – Wiard’s Night Terrors (Ypsilanti)

Night #8 – Rotten Manor (Holly), Bonadeo Farms (Highland) & Dark Legacy (Wixom)

Night #9 – Abandon (Melvindale), Hush (Westland) & Krazy Hilda’s (Ypsilanti)

Night #10 – Woods of Darkness (South Rockwood), Psycho Path (Flat Rock) & Delirium (Wyandotte)

Night #11 – Slaughtered at Sundown (Armada), Haunted Farm of Terror (Lenox Township) & Scarefest Scream Park (New Haven)

I paid special attention this season to attractions that Horrorlust has never toured; there’s 13 listed and Krazy Hilda’s has relocated since our last visit in 2012. Once I identified some fresh blood I sprinkled in some old favorites that we haven’t patronized in a few years. I like that there’s wiggle room in the schedule to allow for unexpected circumstances, for instance, we could easily slot Shawhaven Haunted Farm alongside The Dark Box if need be.

I also wanted to be sure to hit each of the sponsors for Horrorlust Radio and furthermore limited the number of locations toured on any given night to just three. John and I did manage to hit four separate locations on November 1st last year but it was a breakneck pace that did suck some of the enjoyment out of the experience. Admittedly, some of the haunts listed are wild cards but we’ve gambled before and come away with enjoyable experiences.

OTHER HAUNTS OF INTEREST

Bloodview – One of my all-time favorite places. A different theme each weekend is a tempting prospect indeed. I wish it weren’t so damn far from my home.

Bates Haunted Saw Mill & JC’s Axe House – If Haunted Elementary or Clio Manor don’t pan out for any reason this Millington haunt could fit the bill.

Corpse Barn Shock Haunt – Enjoyed it last year, confident an even better show is possible. Plus, it’s hard to pass up if we’re near Jackson.

Darksyde Acres – The old pig farm has become a staple in recent years and it’s hard to resist that wild, unpredictable cast. It’s a haul though without much else in the area.

Dreadlands Haunt of Davison – Might be placed into rotation during trip to Past Tense After Dark if limited dates render lesser knowns unlikely.

The Haunt – I was once told by a veteran haunted house owner that, “If you haven’t been to The Haunt, you haven’t been anywhere.”

Realm of Haunted Minds – It’s close to home and has a throwback charm; I like to visit every couple of years.

7 Floors of Hell – That’s a lot of floors and I need that much haunting in my life. Plus, I love my overnight Ohio trips; especially those that give me an excuse to hit Bloodview.

A Glut of Haunts Dot October Waltz

Posted in Haunt Schedule with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 3, 2011 by bluefall8

This schedule is not finalized by any means, think of it more as a shifting blueprint of the season. The status of a few prominent haunts remain unknown, most namely Demonic Demons in Detroit and Extreme Scream which ran last year in Waterford. Situations such as this can always alter our haunt destinations as can a slew of other obstacles, but here she is so plan accordingly if you’d like to venture with the Haunt Trinity.

10/7 or 10/8 – The Haunting (Adrian) and Darksyde Acres (Jonesville)

10/13 – The Deadland (Warren), Lockdown (Wyandotte), Demonic Demons (Detroit)

10/14 – Chelsea Feargrounds (Chelsea), Krazy Hilda’s (Saline), The Boneyard (Stockbridge)

10/22 (Overnight Trip) – Dent Schoolhouse (Cincinnati) and Land of Illusion (Middletown) OR 7 Floors of Hell (Berea) and Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory (Akron)

10/27 – Combination of Downriver haunts

10/28 or 10/30 – Blake’s (Armada), Erebus (Pontiac)

10/31 – Undetermined

Several of these dates fall on Thursdays and that is because I have made special considerations for some long time haunters. I still plan to hit some haunts on the weekend of those same weeks, any interested haunters are welcome to join me.

New Blood Rising: 2011 Haunt Season

Well my haunt brothers and sisters, it is that time of year again. The kiddies have gone back to school, the air has adopted a crisper quality, and the leaves will soon burst into full radiance for this wonderful season of magic, fright, and laughter. Here I ponder the memories we’ve made and yearn for those yet to pass as I craft the blueprint for this latest season of screams.

The haunt season will officially kick off tomorrow evening when myself, the Disco Devil, and possibly others pay a visit to the formidable Scream Machine — a perennial stalwart of the Downriver haunt scene located in Taylor, Michigan. And if weather permits we’ll make our way to South Rockwood where we’ll enjoy the dark stylings of the Woods of Darkness. Oh October, how you roll in with such atmosphere and presence. Let us consider then shall we the haunted possibilities for the Haunt Trinity and friends this October 2011.

Jason and Disco have both expressed an interest in another overnight haunting experience. Last year we traveled to Columbus, Ohio where we soaked in the wild and outlandish show at Dead Acres: Haunted Hoochie as well as the farm fresh fear of The Haunted Farm. This year two trips vie for our haunt bucks but only one can be chosen. 7 Floors of Hell near Cleveland and The Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory in Akron both have been ranked by various industry publications as top haunts in America. However the Land of Illusion in Middletown, Ohio and the Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati have drawn similar praise. It’s hard to say at this time which of these two trips we’ll choose but I can say with confidence that when all is recorded to time it will have been one hell of a journey.

A bit closer to home a litany of first time visits loom on the fog swept horizon. In Chelsea horror has returned to the fairgrounds where Pigman’s Lair once resided. This year it will host a show most promising entitled Chelsea Feargrounds. I’ve thoroughly checked out the website and this one sounds Grade A. Here they have exploding zombie heads that reportedly shower guests with blood and guts, no joke. I’m sold. Not far from here in either direction lies The Boneyard in Stockbridge featuring three tantalizing attractions — Deadwood Forest, Scarecrow Hollow, and Tent of Terror — and in Saline, Krazy Hilda’s Barn of Doom which taunts haunters from the pages of the Fear Finder with the phrase, “Be there if you dare…my pretty.” Oh, how we dare Hilda!

Even closer to home there is of course the latest offering from the Wyandotte Jaycess — Lockdown. This year the community group has secured what looks to be a derelict bar just down the street from our old apartment on Ford Avenue. There’s also 2008 Dark Horse Award Winner Realm of Haunted Minds in Romulus, the temptingly obscure Psycho Path in Flat Rock, and a slew of others including Apple Charlie’s Barn of Blood and the Lincoln Park classic Anxiety Alley.

Rounding out the haunt season will be a mix of fresh locations and old crypts. The Deadland has come to Warren, in Deadly Intentions old stomping grounds to be precise, a great companion it shall make with Demonic Demons in Detroit for a night of hardcore haunting. If that isn’t enough of a treat for you then venture with us on our long awaited return to Adrian’s The Haunting, in addition experience the Haunt Trinity’s first look at Darksyde Acres in Jonesville. Also not to be forgotten is Blake’s in Armada and perhaps a return to the fabled monster in Pontiac known simply as Erebus.

There is no denying that a number of favorites will fall to the wayside this season — Realm of Darkness, Terror Town, and the Haunted Hydro to name a few — but the new blood refuses to be ignored. Stay tuned to Horrorlust for additional information while the season unfolds. As always my fellow haunt fiends, your thoughts and suggestions are encouraged and welcome.
